Radiation

Radiation - Ways to Protect Ourselves

Please "Glow" with us for a brief moment to understand a few things about radiation.

What is Radiation?

In physics, radiation is a process in which energetic particles or energy or waves travel through a medium or space.

There are two distinct types of radiation; ionizing and non-ionizing.

The word radiation is commonly used in reference to ionizing radiation only (i.e., having sufficient energy to ionize an atom), but it may also refer to non-ionizing radiation (e.g.,  radio waves or visible light ).

The energy radiates (i.e., travels outward in straight lines in all directions) from its source. This geometry naturally leads to a system of measurements and physical units are equally applicable to all types of radiation.

Both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation can be harmful to organisms and can result in changes to the natural environment.

This is a simple drawing of what alpha, beta and gamma radiation could travel through.

Radioactive fuel rods: The silent threat

Japan’s nuclear crisis has highlighted the danger of the spent fuel rods piling up outside America’s nuclear plants

http://theweek.com/article/index/213954/radioactive-fuel-rods-the-silent-threat

How do the Japanese store their spent fuel rods?
The same way we do in the U.S

Could that happen in the U.S.? YES - Just Did!

Simple ways to protect against Radiation

1. Dirt - Easier and Cheaper than most other materials normally available.

The denser the material the less raditation you would receive. We like Dirt for it really is "Dirt" Cheap, pun intended!

Packed dirt to be exact (compacted).

18 inches of Packed dirt, as indicated in this chart, shows 5 halving - thicknesses of packed earth with a protective factor of 32. Which means that if there was 32 gamma rays at the surface you would receive only 1/32 of the radiation.

If additional halving-thicknesses of packed earth shielding are successively added to the five thicknesses shown in Fig. 1.3, the protection factor (PF) is successively increased from 32 to 64, to 128, to 256, to 512, to 1024, and so on. ( chart pg 14 Nuclear War Survival Skills )

30 inches of packed dirt and 6 inches of concrete will give a protective factor of 1000. Which means there will be only 1/1000th of the radiation on the protected side.

2. Underground Shelters

Underground shelters get most of their protection from the dirt and also concrete, wood and most anything else you can pile on top to attenuate or reduce the potential radiation.

Just about anything underground would be helpful to protect from radiation ( though not necessarly from blast). Culverts, big drain pipes, root cellars, some basements that are reinforced, sewers, pole covered trench shelters, carefully reinforced cargo containers and of course commercially built underground shelters. The Survival Center has been building underground shetlers since the late 1970's. Most engineers and architects are not skilled in this type construction.

Many of you could build a simple shelter. Here are a few ideas, in appendix A of the book Nuclear War Survival Skills, they offer instructions for 6 expedient fallout shelters. Something is better than nothing. Just be aware, that going underground presents different construction challenges.

3. Mask - A good quality dust mask is essential.

dust mask

Many times when we are not near a source of radiation, be it a leak or explosion, we could still receive radiation that becomes attached to the dust that comes from such a radiation source. The dust would be carried by the wind and may end up at our location. As you will see in the in-depth articles and information in this newsletter and the other provided links, we do not want to breath in any radioactive dust.

So, a good quality dust mask is a must. You may have seen in some of the pictures from Japan, the workers were wearing dust suits and dust mask. This is just for protection from radioactive dust, as it does not protect from direct radiation.

Radiation Protection

potassium iodate

As you may know Potassium Iodate has been in hot demand.

We are still only getting small amounts in. We are filling back orders

Potassium Iodate is for a limited time usage. It is used mainly to flood the thyroid to prevent radioactive iodine from settling in.

Please, check out some of the research and links below for a greater understanding of the role of a good quality iodine in our daily diet. This is more important than you think.

But we have a new product that we like even better and it is called Survivadine.

Survivadine

Survivadine

A nutritional supplement and a thyroid protector all in one bottle. Survivadine is 99% bio available into the blood stream. Iodine's main function is to provide the neccessary element for the thryroid gland, "shield for the body", this is the center of the immune system in the body.

The thyroid infuences all of the glands and hormones within the human system; this in turn affects and regulates all the systems directly. When the thyroid is operatimg correctly the body can be restored and vitality returns.

Most long standing health conditions will improve in the body.

This DETOXIFIED IODINE is totally different from the typical toxic iodine's that are normally available. There is NO other like Survivadine.

It is also unlike glandular or prescriptions containing hormones that take over the thyroid's job, instead of nutritionally building the thyroid to do its own job.

Seaweed, seafood, greens, raw sunflower seeds, and iodized salt may not have the neccessary levels to support the thyroid fully for good health in the body.

Survivadine is:

  1. Deep Mined Iodine
  2. Most Pure
  3. Does a better Job
  4. 10 Drops = appox. one 170 mg Potassium Iodate tab
  5. One bottle will last approx. 1 month at 10 drops per day. Longer on minimum usage.
  6. Smaller amount can be taken for body balancing purposes.
  7. Easy to use 1/2 oz dropper bottle.
  8. No harmful side effects.
  9. This is an alcohol based concentrated iodine solution for regular useage.

DIRECTIONS Suggested: 1 drop in 3 to 6 oz of water for the first day then increasing 1 drop each day thereafter for 5 days, then give yourself 2 days off. Then start the process all over again, do this for 3 weeks. After this process 5 to 7 drops per day or what you feel is right for you. Children newborn to one month 1/8 - 1/4 amount. One month to 3 years 1/4 amount, 3-12 1/2 amount. 12 and older full amount.

You can apply topically also with great results. Taking this product after mid afternoon can raise your energy levels and could cause you not to be able to sleep well.

In an emergency, one could take up to 10-15 drops in 24 hours.

1 - $59.95 per 1/2 oz. bottle
2-3 56.95 each
4-6 53.95 each
7 + 49.95 each

Uncle Richard says – Water Water Water

This week we have a simple “how to” on how to ensure you have enough water in an emergency.

City supplies and even country wells may seem like the best thing since sliced bread. But, as a letter from a subscriber points out, even the best laid plans can fail in an emergency.

Radioactive Water

Be it droughts, floods, or contamination by nuclear or volcanic activity, WATER is something we MUST be sure we have.

So store water.

BIG Water Storage Container Sale

In the middle of a some what level of panic buying of preparedness/emergency supplies and all of us now waiting months for back orders to get filled, we thought it would be a great idea to have a sale on water storage containers before the price goes up again. Water being the first thing we really need.

For example, the 30 gallon size drum for water storage, will now sell for almost as much as a 55 gal drum. The 55 gal drum will be close to 100 each! Yikes!!  (they are made from petroleum)

What we are saying is that if you are going to continue preparing and you see something you need, get it then and there for tomorrow it may not be available or the price just went up. That is what is happening to us. Within weeks the same item goes up 10-20% and no notice. Just bang! There it is.

We just managed to get a big order in for barrels before they all go up in price so here some prices we may never see again.

Limited Availability

Water Barrel size and quantity discounts. All plus shipping.
Speaking of shipping. While we can ship one barrel by UPS it will cost almost as much as the price of the barrel. So, if you can order at least 4 or in multiplies of 4, then we can put them on a skid and ship via truck which may be cheaper in many cases. This would be a great time to add on any thing else you want for we can ship one or more skids full of goodies as cheaply as we can one half full.

55 gallon water barrels ( you could also store fuel, gas etc. in these barrels but then it can only be used for that item.)
55 gallon water barrel 1 = $89.95, 2-3 $84.95 each, 4-8 $76.95 each, 9 + $71.95 each. +s&h
5 gal Stack-able Water Storage Container. 1=$19.95, 2-5 $17.95 each, 6 + $15.95 each +s&h

The Super Tankers are here.
250 gallon $559.95 – Sale Price $479.95 + s&h
125 gallon $399.95 – Sale Price $319.95 + s&h

The 250 gal Super Tanker's footprint is 28" Wide, 36" Deep. This is less than that of two 55 gallon drums and holds almost 5 times the volume 28" Wide Fits through any standard door, for indoor water storage. 7' Tall Easily fits in the typical 8 foot ceiling room. Gravity Fed No need for an expensive siphon pump to dispense water or a wrench to open the barrel. Spring loaded cap Allows for enough air to avoid the glug glug effect when dispensing water from the spigot and keeps dust and bugs from getting into your water.

The 125 gal tank holds as much water as 2- 55 gallon drums plus 15 gallons more.
Gravity Fed (no need for an expensive siphon pump to dispense water)
Comes complete with spigot and high quality ball valve. One about 2 1/2 feet up from the bottom for getting water and one at the bottom that can be hooked up to a hose for draining. It also has a screw on lid at the top for filling the tank.

It is advised that you use a brand new hose (RV type is best) for filling and draining the tank so it is always clean and eliminates the concern of bacteria getting into the water supply.

If you treat the water in the tank with 1 x 70ML Aerobic07 bottle of water treatment, the water in the tank will stay safe and free of bacteria for approx. 5 years.

This tank will hold enough water for two people for a 2 month emergency supply of water. This tank weighs 60 pounds. UV Ray resistant 23 years. FDA & HPB Approved food grade polyethylene.

Designed to fit through any 28" doorway to become the best in-home water storage container.
These tanks also have water level marks that show how much water is in the tank.

The shipping on this water tank is estimated at about 185.00 for the first one. If you order more than one tank at a time the shipping only goes up about 50.00 extra for the second tank because they can be shipped on the same pallet. If you have a friend, or relative that wants one it cuts the shipping charges down by about half.  They are shipped by a trucking company. You will be notified about the time of delivery so you can be there to get the tank. Allow 2 -3weeks for delivery.

If you live closer your shipping charges will be less. Exact shipping charge will be sent to you in an e-mail or by a phone call. Some may be in stock for local pickup.

Have you noticed how quickly major disasters disappear from the headlines, hardly ever to be revisited again. Katrina, Haiti, Gulf Oil Spill, and now Japan. None of these have really “gone away”, just ignored.

Japan is far worse than anyone will tell you. Dangerous radiation is spreading around the world. Do you know how to protect yourself? In-depth articles are being worked on now to offer suggestions and tips.
We are monitoring radiation here at our location and will keep you informed through this media.

There are many “New” preparedness businesses that want to “sell” you something. Here at The Family Survival News Team we want to inform you as well. An informed decision will save you time and money.
